The Role

We are seeking an experienced Quality Control Lead in Steel Fabrication to provide critical training, quality oversight, and process optimization. The successful candidate will live in Changshu on-site at our factory to ensure our structural steel modular housing frame products meet the highest North American standards for quality, durability, and compliance.

This is a one-year, technical role requiring deep expertise in steel fabrication best practices, particularly within a controlled factory environment utilizing Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) processes on medium-sized H-beam and RHS raw steel materials.

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be responsible for a comprehensive review and daily oversight of active project operations, including:

1. Shop Drawings & Materials Inspection

• Plan Reviews for Technical Accuracy : Critically examine current product designs, joint details, Welding Symbols, Welding Procedure Specifications (WPSs), and joint geometry prior to welding to ensure compliance with relevant US/Canadian building codes and best practices.
• Plan Reviews for Product Alignment and Accuracy: Evaluate and review Subcontractor fabrication shop drawings for completeness and conformance to the approved Stack Modular designs issued for fabrication. Must have experience redlining and reviewing welding details and steel structural shop drawings.
• Verification Lab Testing Coordination: Help prepare samples of received lots of raw material at Subcontractor facility for 3rd party laboratory verification testing. Must track specimens and all associated reports received from the partner labs engaged for the projects.

2. Process Optimization & Training

• Process Mapping: Review and revise the current workflow for steel fabrication quality control and testing. Suggest improvements or efficiencies where necessary.
• Techniques & Equipment: Evaluate existing equipment, conditions, and worker techniques in use. Recommend specific upgrades, additions, training, or modifications to improve process efficiency and consistency.

3. Quality Assurance & Standards Development

• Quality Control (QC) Program: Review and enhance the current QC Inspection and Testing Plans, project quality criteria, and structural steel fabrication qc documentation processes.
• Defect Root Cause Analysis: Identify and troubleshoot common defects such as porosity and incomplete fusion and develop preventative measures or appropriate repair procedures
• Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs): Develop clear, visual, and concise SOPs for all critical steps in welding quality control where these SOPs don’t already exist in the company system.

Qualifications

Experience: A minimum of 10 years of hands-on experience in commercial structural steel welding for buildings. Industrial welding experience with boilers, pressure vessels, or gas and oil process piping is also acceptable.

Technical Expertise:

• Deep knowledge of governing codes and implementation of codes during work. AWS D1.1/D1.1M, AWS D1.3/D1.3M, AWS D1.8M/D1.8, and CWB W59 are all highly sought after. Experience or qualification with API, ASME, ISO, EN or GB/T welding codes will also be strongly considered.
• Expertise in overseeing procedure qualification and welder qualification
• Comprehensive understanding of many welding processes, such as SMAW, TIG, etc.

Modular/Factory Experience (Preferred): Experience working on modular, prefabricated, or production-line construction projects is a significant asset.

Training & Communication: Proven ability to effectively train, mentor, and communicate technical information to diverse multi-lingual teams.

Physical Requirements: Ability to be on a factory floor for extended periods, including climbing stairs/ladders and withstanding increased temperatures of weld shop as required.

Travel: Must be willing and able to travel and reside in Changshu for the duration of the contract.

Technological Capacity: Must have some experience with mobile phones and tablets and be able to contribute to the digital record-keeping systems in place at the company.
